There is no substitute for arriving at the summit of Mount Batur on your own two feet. The 1,717-meter volcano — one of Bali’s two great peaks — rises above the ancient Kintamani caldera and is widely considered the most rewarding trek in Bali. Our guided Mount Batur Summit Trekking tour gets you to the crater rim just as the sun rises, for a view that stays with you long after you leave the island.

The journey begins before dawn with a hotel pickup and a drive to the mountain gate in Toya Bungkah. Your certified local guide — required by park regulations and assigned by the official Mount Batur guide association — meets you here, hands over your headlamp and walking poles, and gives a brief safety orientation before the trail begins.

The first 45 minutes are deceptively gentle: a wide, well-worn path through forest and scrub, the headlamp picking out the trail and the occasional tree root. Then the slope steepens. Volcanic gravel shifts underfoot as the trail narrows and becomes more demanding — this is the section where you earn the view. Most guests reach the crater rim in 1.5 to 2 hours. The pace is yours; your guide walks with you, not ahead of you.

At the top, everything changes. The world opens up. Below you, Lake Batur catches the first light of morning. Behind it, the perfect cone of Mount Agung rises above the clouds. To the south, the Bali highlands roll away toward Ubud. Your guide produces breakfast from a backpack — boiled eggs, banana sandwiches, cookies, fresh fruit, and steaming hot drinks prepared using vents of natural volcanic steam rising through the rock — a detail that never fails to surprise first-time visitors.

Wild monkeys patrol the summit area with confidence, drawn by the smell of food. Keep your bag closed and your snacks guarded. After breakfast and photography, the descent takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours back to the gate. The downhill section is harder on the knees but rewarding in its own right — you can finally see the terrain you climbed through in darkness. Optional natural hot springs or coffee plantation visits can be arranged for the return journey.
