Setting off before dawn, your 4×4 jeep leaves the main road and drops onto the volcanic surface itself. The ride is rough and exhilarating — the jeep lurches and grinds over lava rock formations, through cooled lava corridors, and across stretches of black sand that look more like the surface of another planet than the tropical island most visitors know. Your driver knows every track, every safe route, every hidden vantage point.
By the time you reach the primary viewpoint, the horizon begins to lighten. The sunrise here feels different from anywhere else on the mountain — you are surrounded by the lava field on all sides, and the first rays of morning light turn the dark rock into deep shades of burnt orange and bronze. Lake Batur glitters below, and on clear mornings you can see the silhouette of Mount Agung to the east.
Your guide serves breakfast while you take in the scene. After eating, the exploration continues on foot and by jeep — walking among volcanic craters, peering into fissures where steam still escapes from the earth’s surface, and learning about the geological history of one of Bali’s most active volcanoes from a guide who has grown up in the shadow of the mountain.
